Some helpful information
I would recommend you purchase a 5/6 wt. outfit for regular trout fishing. Scientific Anglers sells a great outfit for beginners for about $75.00 at your local Walmart. It comes with all you need to start......including a few flies. If I can be of any help.....post your questions here.

Check out my blog!!!! Lots of information for you there brother.

Well, what's the report? Did you get your outfit? Or still need some help?
Maybe your local CSF chapter is sponsoring some "Learn to fly fish" sessions.

Best advice anyone can give a newbie, is find a mentor. Most FF guys I know are happy to help and spend time with a newcomer. It shortens the learning curve tremendously. When I started out 40-some years ago, it took me three years to catch my first trout . . . no mentor.

I was on a local lake last night, and ran across a 19 year old kid struggling with a miss-matched outfit, short leader and bluegill popper, trying to catch trout. "Just starting out", he said. (Reminded me of myself 40 years ago). I extended his leader to 9-feet 5x, tied on a size 14 caddis soft hackle, and showed him how to cast. He caught a 6-inch "planter" his second cast. I'm sure I walked away happier than he did.

Ask around and find yourself someone to buddy up with. Good luck.

Well Im going to take your advise and join my local fly fishing club.Hopefully they will also teach me how to get started in fly tying. Also since my last posting I have joined trout Unlimited after watching the show On The Rise on the Outdoor Channel I think what they are trying to do is a pretty good thing for us and the fish. Some people don't like the Org.and I don't know
why ? If anyone who is reading this post has input I would like to know.
Hey thank you guys again for helping me get started.

I've heard that, too. Mostly it stems from the proliferation of fly fishing addicts in the organization. Even though TU is first and foremost a coldwater conservation organization, it isn't viewed that way by many (bait fishermen IMHO). I suppose that over the years, TU has found that fly fishing addicts are more inclined to spend money (donate) at fundraising banquets, than are other types . . . so their banquets and magazines, etc., are inclined toward that group, much more so than towards the spoon and spinner tossers, or bait fishermen. Combine all that with the long, steep learning curve to become a good fly fisher (as opposed to spinners or bait), and you have a strong potential to be labeled as "snobs" by "outsiders". That's just the reality, and its probably accurate; not that TU is a snob group, but it is certainly viewed that way by many.
It's amazing what some people can get all bent out of shape over. I know one fellow that sums it up nicely when he says, "Aw, shut up and fish!".
