Chapter Leadership Training Introduction

This leadership training publication has been prepared for the purpose of helping church leaders to encourage,
empower then engage Christian sportsmen in developing a viable men’s outreach to sportsmen. Relevant men’s
ministry events and projects provide the basis for fellowship where growth occurs around common passions
which then lead to long term friendships. Used as a personal or group devotional, chapter leaders have found
the F.I.R.E. Publication to be very helpful in understanding the sportsmen’s central role in fulfilling the Great
Commission. As sportsmen, we can unashamedly utilize our passions for hunting, fishing and target shooting
to bring men, women, boys and girls to the Lord Jesus Christ.

CSF uses the very appropriate metaphor of “Climbing Legacy Mountain” to communicate essential lifelong
goals in becoming a follower of Jesus Christ then passing the Christian heritage down to the next generation.
Climbing Legacy Mountain applies to an individual's desire to grow spiritually as well as a group team who
follows a discipling track together.

Climbing Legacy Mountain - A discipling track to follow!

                                                                                                            Lifelong Kingdom Service
                                                                   Seasoned Sportsman    -        ASSAULT Camp
X-Treme Discipling   -         GUIDE Camp                (Come & Mentor)
Fellowship Events     EQUIPPING Camp            (Come & Serve)                  John 21:15-19
BASE Camp    -     (Come & Grow)                 Luke 5:10-11
    (Come & See)             1 Peter 2:2a
     John 1:37-39

The four camps found on Legacy Mountain represent specific goals in the sportsman’s spiritual journey as
he seeks to become a follower of Christ.

The mission of Christian Sportsmen’s Fellowship then creates the infrastructure for scheduling various
events and projects designed to reach men at each successive level of spiritual formation and eventually
into becoming a Seasoned Sportsman.

A man climbs Legacy Mountain as an individual before he can even consider climbing with a group team.
His personal level of maturity will determine his place of service together with a group team.

The Individual’s Quest to Climb Legacy Mountain
                                                                                                                  Lasting Fruit
                                                                                Much Fruit      │     ASSAULT Camp
Fruit             │       GUIDE Camp           (Mentoring Others)
No Fruit       │    EQUIPPING Camp            (Serving Others)              John 15: 16
BASE Camp            (Growing in Christ)                 John 15: 5
 (Knowing Christ)                John 15: 3-4
     John 15: 2

BASE CAMP

The most essential of all sustenance is the fruit that comes from new life in Christ at the time that one
is “born of the Spirit of God” while at the Base Camp of life. Jesus very pointedly spoke to the disciples
regarding the wheat and tares that grow together until harvest time when the two are separated with the
weeds bundled up and burned while the wheat is brought into the Master’s barn. Matt 13:24-30

Unregenerate churchmen will not inherit God’s Kingdom. Even the good works of selfless service within
the church will not qualify a man to enter into God’s Kingdom. Jesus refers to such works as wood, hay
and stubble, the building materials used by some, which will be shown for what it is, because the day will
bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. 1 Cor 3:12

For this reason, the most crucial step in Climbing Legacy Mountain is to know with certainty that genuine
fruit is being produced at the Base Camp level.

As seeds of faith are sown by those desiring to know Christ it is critical that seed planted along the path
falls on fertile soil and not the rocky ground where the enemy prevents new life from beginning.

Even Christian men often mill around in the BASE Camp because they are weighed down with sins and
cares of the world. Fellowship with more mature men will encourage carnal Christians to step out in faith
to become the husband, father and church leader God intends them to be.

EQUIPPING CAMP

Inviting others to receive Christ is a definite indication that God is working through a man’s life. Bruce
Wilkinson in his book “Secrets of the Vine” states, “The [first century] disciples would not have
interpreted Jesus’ words to just mean evangelism. As people who lived close to nature, they would have
understood that fruit symbolized the best result or sweetest prize in life.”

The righteous man shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth fruit in its season,
whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.
Psalms 1:3

“In practical terms, fruit represents good works – a thought, attitude, or action of ours that God values
because it glorifies Him. The fruit from your life is how God receives His due honor on earth. That’s
why Jesus declares, ‘By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit’ John 15:8

Fruit is our only permanent deposit in heaven.

GUIDE CAMP

Servant Leadership baffles the world and often confounds those of us who have enough faith to believe
this basic precept found in God’s word… “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
An abundance of fruit is produced while abiding in the vine.

God has chosen a divine plan to work in and through imperfect man to accomplish his plan and
purposes, men redeemed by the blood of Christ who bear much fruit.

Oswald Chambers commented, “Many people begin coming to God once they stop being religious,
because there is only one master of the human heart … Jesus Christ, not religion. Jesus will never
insist that I obey, but if I don’t, I have already begun to sign the death certificate of the Son of God
in my soul.” The maturing Christian is compelled to serve, not out of coercion but from a devoted
faith to the One who has transformed a sin sick heart.

ASSAULT CAMP

The Assault Camp is for seasoned men of God who have been persuaded that this world is no
longer their home, saved not by good works but unto good works. Experienced mountain climbers
are sure footed and understand the terrain at each camp along the trail in Climbing Legacy Mountain.
Properly outfitted for the lifelong journey of mentoring others in traversing from one camp to the
next, such seasoned followers of Christ have their glance on their personal needs while their gaze
remains on their Savior and Lord. Close communication with the LORD is the true mark of a maturing
follower of Jesus Christ. Head knowledge becomes heart knowledge then results in following Christ’s
command to “Love each other”. John 15:17. “Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions
and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

“Fruit that bears fruit” results when servant leaders invest in the lives of others. Seasoned men of
God can effectively serve as mentors in assisting new Christians in transitioning from the BASE
CAMP to the EQUIPPING CAMP and on to the GUIDE CAMP.
